Chore, with Prayer

Immersed in the dirt
I water and weed
stretch and sweat
untangling the beans from
tomatoes and cucumbers
lost in the chore
of directing and caging
and guiding plants
with a prayer
that given enough
tender care
they will produce
juicy succulent
vegetables
fresh and tasty
to nourish my body
as does this task
of gardening
nourish my soul

Being new to Crozet - coming from Brooklyn where gardens are pretty much out of the question - I couldn't help but notice how almost in every yard I see there is a garden, which along side the countryside of this area, makes for a truly beautiful sight, especially to a city dweller such as myself. This poem says it all when it comes to speaking for all gardeners, including myself for one - now!
